Merchandise Planning Analyst
Department: Office Team
Reports To: Buyer
The Merchandise Planning Analyst at Cornell’s Jewelers plays a key role in ensuring optimal inventory levels across all product categories and price points, with the goal of maximizing sales opportunities while minimizing excess inventory and stockouts. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate inventory data, analyzing sales trends and inventory turns, and collaborating with both the Buyer and Sales teams to align inventory levels with customer demand and business strategy.
Key Responsibilities:
• Monitor and analyze inventory levels across all categories (bridal, fashion jewelry, timepieces, etc.) to ensure optimal stock positions.
• Weekly reports and monthly reports (levels, categories), quarterly deep dives
• Generate and maintain accurate inventory reports, including stock valuation, aging reports, and sell-through analyses.
• Assist in forecasting demand and planning inventory purchases by analyzing historical sales trends, seasonality, and promotional calendars.
• Identify and recommend slow-moving, obsolete, or excess inventory for markdown, clearance, or return to vendors. Aged monthly reports
• Ensure accurate data entry of inventory receipts, transfers, adjustments, and returns in the point-of-sale/inventory management system.
• Support inventory cycle counts and physical inventory audits to maintain data integrity, track down missing inventory items during inventory.
• Collaborate closely with the Buyer and Sales team to align inventory strategy with sales goals and marketing initiatives.
• Communicate with vendors regarding order status, deliveries, and discrepancies when needed.
• Recommend inventory best practices and process improvements to increase efficiency and reduce shrinkage.
• Source and track all call stones
• Manage scrap refining process and ensure timely turn around
• Estate items, review what comes in from scrap, send to shop for refurbish and receive in POS.
• Manage all loose diamond inventory, provide suggestions to CEO for additional buys. Manage relationship with diamond vendors.
• Manage memo inventory, reconcile monthly on hand and confirm cost
• Help with floor coverage as needed during events or busy times
• Fill in for receiving and Special orders when Inventory Receiving specialist is out
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
• Inventory Turnover Rate — Target turns aligned with industry benchmarks and category goals. (Category, level and vendor)
• Stockout Rate — Maintain stockout percentage below defined threshold (e.g., <5% on key SKUs) – get fast sellers in.
• Inventory Accuracy — Maintain inventory accuracy rate of ≥98% during cycle counts and annual audits. Report on it
• Aged Inventory Value — Monitor and reduce % of inventory aged over 365 days.
• Inventory Compliance — Ensure timely completion and reconciliation of cycle counts (e.g., 100% adherence to schedule).
• Order & Delivery Management — Ensure vendor orders are placed and delivered on time with a high level of accuracy (target: ≥95% accuracy and on-time delivery). Weekly management of open PO’s for Stock and Memo items.
